Spend time with your child

I was shopping the other day and ran across a neat preschool activity book. I thought it would be great for my four-year-old. She loved it. But to my dismay, she scribbled on every page then cut it up and had a real good time. I realized that the best book in the world wasn't going to do her any good unless I went through it with her. So if you've found a great preschool book for your little one, keep in mind, that 15 minutes with mother can do more for a child than the best book in the world. Go through it with her. If your reading a book, reciting a favorite poem, or singing the alphabet, the time your spend with that child will bring far better results than the book itself.

Compare the preschooler alone with the book to a DVD with no player. It just doesn't do much good.

Learning Games

Every day we learn whether we want to or not. For example, I decided my husband could do the laundry as pay back for digging holes in our sandy back yard with his new track hoe. What did I learn? My husband does not know how to do laundry. Now I could go through a lot of agony to teach him, or I could just do it myself. Or(good idea) I could teach the children to do the laundry. They're the ones that played in all that sand and brought it into and all over the house.

So now I just need to figure out how to make learning how to do the laundry fun. The first step?
Act like it is fun. If I enjoy it my children will see me having so much fun they'll want to join in.

The second step- let them help. My two year old loves to put the clothes in and out of the washer, dryer, baskets, etc. My four-year-old discovered a great game in sorting clothing into lights and darks. If she finds laundry lying about the house, she'll come running to see which batch it goes in.

So much for learning fun. I'd better get started on my 8+ loads of laundry now. And maybe learn some time management and discipline techniques at the same time.

Red Sand

1-19-08

The starting of a new era.

I decided to start my blog with the most important part of my life. Mother. Mother! MOTHER!!! shouted all six of my children as i started to type. "Can we go play in the sand while you look at the computer?" My husband had recently purchased/traded a new Cat backhoe and was trying it out in the back yard by digging huge holes everywhere. When i realized the amount of red sand that would come in the house i started looking for a bomb shelter.

Last time the children played in the new holes i sent the children straight to the bathroom to change while finishing my typing. Pretty soon i noticed that the water in my drinking glass was starting to tip toward the bathroom. Does the backyard have any sand in it anymore?, or is it all in the bathroom? Then when Tia my next to youngest started to giggle i knew things were tipping. The baby swing had started to swing by itself as it slid across the floor.

It didn't get that extreme, however the washer groaned for days afterwords.

So the name of my first blog is Red Sand. I have lived it and breathed it my whole life. I remember an art teacher moving into town from back east wondering why the children were coloring the ground red instead of green. She caught on pretty quick.

Then the solution hit me like a sandstorm! Why not have my husband do the laundry for a few days? Surely he would be happy to since work is a little slow. I will let you know if this conspiracy works tomorrow on twentynine and counting.
